“The design for the proposed new Cleveland Hearing & Speech Center is a case in point. Created by the Bostwick Design Partnership, the plans call for a four-story building at Euclid Avenue and East 117th Street to replace an older structure several blocks to the west on the University Hospitals campus. Construction cost will be $11.8 million, and the total project, including fees, furniture, equipment and other costs, will be $16 million. University Hospitals, which needs the land occupied by the hearing and speech center to expand along Euclid Avenue west of Cornell Road, has contributed $8 million toward the smaller institution.

Bostwick’s design is generally likable, and if carried out well in details and in construction, it will certainly be a fine new presence on the street. Just before Christmas, the project won approval for its basic concept from the University Circle Design Review Committee, which advises the City Planning Commission. The question, however, is whether it should be even better, given the key position it will occupy at the eastern gateway to University Circle…” (go to article)

    I like Ted Sande, I really do. I enjoy listening to him. I just don’t agree that every building in University Circle has to be visibly ’spectacular’. Especially if the program is handled in an extremely delicate but amazing way.

    Sometimes I really like well built background buildings.
